Loma Verde Elementary Math Club Celebrates its Second Year

Novato, CA, May 12, 2010 - Students who actively participated in the 2009 - 2010 Loma Verde Elementary School Math Club will celebrate their achievements with parents, Principal Eileen Smith and Superintendent Jan La Torre-Derby the evening of May 20. A small team of Loma Verde students were among the nearly 150,000 students worldwide to participate in the Math Olympiad program. They participated in a series of five monthly contests from November to March. The students learned to solve unusual and difficult problems and to think creatively.

 

The students performed well this year and will be recognized with certificates for their participation. Ten of the Mathletes qualified for national awards for excellence within the elementary division for grades 4-6.

  • Allie Level is one of the less than one percent of students to earn the prestigious Dr. George Lenchner Medallion awarded for a perfect score of 25 points.
  • DJ McIntyre will be awarded a silver pin in recognition of his top 10% overall score.
  • Patches are awarded to students in the top 50% of all participants. Scott Slovensky, Kelsea Bergerson, Zachary McIntyre, Trhemson Desenn-Concepcion, Kaili Winters, Connor Raiger, Emmet Wertz and Madelyn Jantzen earned this honor.

The Math Club completed its inaugural year at Loma Verde in 2009 and was initiated by Principal Eileen Smith. While participation the Math Olympiad provides some focus for the club the real objective is to promote problem solving strategies and flexible thinking. The club is open to 4th and 5th grade students enrolled at Loma Verde.
